Session One:

‘Pen and paper’ games & strategies guaranteed to engage the most reluctant writers

Alan will begin by modelling a huge range of short-burst games from his own ‘Word Games’  book as well as many new ideas. He will show how these can be used as lesson-starters; extension activities, as well as ‘brain breaks’.

Session Two:

Apps to engage reluctant writers AND the importance of broadening audiences for writing

Alan will model how best to use a broad range of apps (many of which he has produced) to develop both vocabulary as well as fiction and non-fiction writing. The session will end with an exploration of practical ways of broadening audiences for pupils’ writing.

Session Three:
Reading-into-writing games

Alan will model ‘Write-a-picture’ strategies as well as explore books such as ‘The Ultimate Alphabet’. The importance of wordless picture books for older pupils (including Joe Sacco’s work) and comics will also feature.

Session Four:
Engaging reluctant able writers

Many able pupils are reluctant writers. In this session Alan will consider enrichment (widening the range of writing opportunities) & enhancement (adding extra tiers of complexity) approaches. Oulipean strategies such as Lipograms and the Macao constraint will also be explored.
